How Poor Leadership Communication Can Harm Workplace Psychological Safety

Being in a work environment that isn’t Psychologically Safe is like being in a mentally abusive relationship. Often, one can’t identify the actions by their employer that negatively impacting their mental health, which then leads to the decline in your physical health too, but they know when they don’t feel valued. An example can be found in People Managers who don’t regularly communicate with their staff. This can cause mental harm in the form of psychosocial hazards that results in decreased job clarity and increased isolation, which can then lead to increased anxiety and depression, and often resulting in poor performance and increased absences. If this cycle is not broken, the employee will leave the company.

It is important now more than ever for employers to identify Psychosocial Hazards and rectify them by making their employee’s Mental Health Safety a priority, whether it’s out of the goodness of their heart or because they fear loss to their bottom line. The time for Workplace Psychological Safety is now.
